Electoral Reform town hall set for Sept. 9th in Smithers

Town hall meetings will be held across the northwest in September seeking public feedback on changes to the current first-past-the-post system.

Skeena Bulkley-Valley NDP MP Nathan Cullen, and Vice Chair of the Electoral Reform Committee, says the Smithers’ town hall will be held Sept 9th.

“And we’re looking at engaging folks across the northwest,” also though teleconference calls and mail-outs, says Cullen.

The Electoral Reform Committee is made up of party members based proportionally on the last election, after the feds endorsed Cullen’s private members bill. The five Liberal, three Conservative, two NDP, one Bloc Quebecois and Green Party members are part of the committee tasked with changing the system under the Liberal Government.

The official opposition Conservative Party is demanding a referendum ahead of any changes to the voting system.

Cullen says he’s focused on bringing Canadians what they want. “What kinds of systems are people interested in, what kind of principles do we need to have in place?”
