Decision on Pacific Northwest LNG project expected today

A decision for federal approval of the Northwest LNG Project on Lelu Island is expected to be announced today in Vancouver at 5:15 p.m.

Chief Namoks with the Office of the Wet’suwet’en says he was planning to meet with ministers this afternoon in Ottawa on the proposed project.

“We came from the other end of Canada to meet them, and they jump on a plane to go back to where we just came from,” says Namoks from Ottawa.

He’s expecting an ‘OK’ on the project today, with the next step litigation.

“We called our litigation teams and told them to get the ball rolling,” says Namoks, otherwise known as John Ridsdale.

Peace River MP Bob Zimmer is hoping a petition he tabled in the House of Commons yesterday will sway some minds in the federal cabinet.

He says he expects a ‘yes’, but is a little worried about what kind of conditions could come along with that.

“Obviously we want good conditions on the project that are good for the environment etc. But we want conditions that are not what I call a poison pill, that kill the project just because it’s overly onerous or costly.”

The joint announcement will be made by Minister of Environment and Climate Change Katherine McKenna, Minister of Natural Resources Jim Carr, and Minister of Fisheries, Oceans and the Canadian Coast Guard Dominic LeBlanc.

We’ll have more on the decision once it’s announced.
