Hazelton Mayor Alice Maitland receives Lifetime Achievement award at UBCM

Village of Hazelton Mayor Alice Maitland is the recipient of a lifetime achievement award at the Union of BC Municipalities Convention today in Victoria.

During her service as mayor for 40 years, Maitland says living next to the Gitxsan people and the sense of community has been inspiring.

“We need to forget the lines, and that’s what I hope I’ve done in that community,” says Maitland.

“In that whole Upper Skeena area we stick together, we work together, and I think that we’ll move ahead together. We go up and down, and sometimes we have jobs and we’re prosperous, and other times we’re quite poor. But we have that community spirit. I think in lots of ways we are the richest community I know of.”

Stikine MLA Doug Donaldson compliments her service having previously worked beside her on council for 10 years.

“She’s been an amazing mentor to me to show how local government can have an impact.”

Over her four decades of service, Donaldson says Maitland has raised the voice of the community to the provincial level.

“She has amazing tenacity and energy, and is someone that cares. When you have that kind of energy it rubs people the right way and leads to things getting done.”

The award was given by the North Central Local Government Association.
