Highway of Tears walker Brett Merchant receives Wet’suwet’en blessing

After walking all the way from the BC border, Brett Merchant has brought his Highway of Tears walk to Smithers.

He’s been walking to keep the awareness of the missing and murdered alive, and has been asking for blessings from First Nations communities he’s travelled through, including the Wet’suwet’en.

“So I come here and I’m knocking on the door saying, ‘hi, I’m Brett. Am I welcome to come through your territory or land? It’s about respect,” says Merchant. “I wont cross this town, (Smithers) and I haven’t in any town, until I get a blessing to go through.”

So far, he’s raised over 5 thousand dollars that will go directly to women’s shelters. He has an ultimate goal of raising 50 thousand. But aside from collecting money, his drive to walk the highway of tears is focused on awareness.

“Think about everybody else first…like help everybody. Why do we walk by people and judge them, why do we walk by people and go, ‘you’re not good enough?'”

He’ll be leaving from Smithers in the next day on his journey to the end of the highway with his dog.
