MP Nathan Cullen calls once again for coastal oil tanker ban following spill

With the recent spill of thousands of litres of diesel from a sunken tug off the coast of Bella Bella, MP Nathan Cullen has been critical of the Liberal’s promise last year of an oil tanker ban on BC’s coast.

“The Prime Minster promised to protect our beautiful BC coast with a permanent tanker ban. When will he make that promise a reality?”

In the house this week, Cullen also says affected First Nations groups called the government’s response to the spill inadequate.

Minister of Transportation Marc Garneau says the Liberals have a coastal strategy coming forward soon to increase marine safety.

“Our government is committed to improving marine protection, and taking measures in respect to marine safety,” says Garneau. “We are responding as quickly as possible. But that is a good indication as to why we need to improve marine safety, that is what we’re going to do…stay tuned.”

Prime Minister Justin Trudeau called for a moratorium on oil tankers on the BC coast last year.
