Affordable housing project for seniors and adults with disabilities coming to Smithers

A proposed development is looking to ease some of the housing struggles in Smithers.

The Dik Tiy Housing Society in partnership with BC Housing is looking to build a 3-story, 19 residential unit on Main Street at 16th Avenue, just West of the Bulkley River.

It will be for seniors and adults with disabilities.

“We’re really fortunate in Smithers to have some great community organizations that have taken on the housing mandate and have developed a whole number of successful housing projects – whether it’s housing for disabilities or people on low income,” says Mayor Taylor Bachrach.

The proposed development apparently will be the first of its kind in Smithers to adhere to the ‘Passive Housing’ standard – an exceptionally high standard for energy efficiency.

“We really want to see the energy profile of our community transformed,” says Bachrach.

This Thursday the planning commission will look at some variance permits for the proposed development.

“Hopefully we’ll see this project up and running before too long.”

The proponent will be meeting next week to discuss costs and other details to be made public.
