Smithers/Telkwa Area A finishes AAP approving Victim Services funding

The Regional District Area A will be locking in funding for victim services after holding an Alternative Approval Process.

A ceiling of 45 thousand shared between Smithers, Telkwa and Area A in funding for the service has been set for a 50 per cent cost share with the province.

Area A director Mark Fisher says it creates a sustainable funding model that helps victims of trauma from car accidents to violent crime.

“I’m looking at other ways to offset that as we come into the budget cycle,” says fisher.

Municipalities are voluntarily on the hook for 50 per cent of the service.

Based on 36 thousand for 2016, the increased taxes would be 1 dollar 96 cents per 100 thousand in tax assessment.

For local service taxes, the tax is calculated on 50% of the assessed value of farm land (Class 9).

176 people disagreed with the ongoing taxation and funding of up to 54 thousand dollars for victim services as part of the AAP.
