Smithers to look into Tesla charging station

Smithers council is looking to connect with Tesla on the possibility of bringing an electric vehicle charging station to the town.

Unsure on the details, Mayor Taylor Bachrach says they’ll be looking to find out more about the program where Tesla provides the charging station for free, provided the town gives up some land.

Councillor Frank Wray is wary of council using town owned land to potentially promote a business. He’s also worried the charging station would only be useful for Tesla cars.

At this point, Bachrach says it’s an exploratory endeavor where “we’re simply asking staff to fill out a little inquiry form on Tesla’s website and find out more about their program.
We heard some concerns from some councillors, and those certainly have merit.

“Our work as council and as a town has to be in the general public interest, and that’s something we take very seriously. At the same time, we’ve heard the support for the facilitation of electric cars in our region,” says Bachrach.
