Northern Development Initiative Trust gave Smithers a 125 thousand dollar cheque today for the Regional Airport Modernization Project.
The money will help cover part of the costs of the renovation project that will see a larger floor plan, washrooms and a geo-exchange system.
Mayor Taylor Bachrach says they still need to secure a little over one million to cover the additional costs.
“Between the regional district and Northern Development Initiative Trust, we’re getting very close to that goal of raising the full 8.17 million dollars,” says Bachrach.
Town staff have indicated that they’re looking for another $750,000 through a BC Air Access Grant.
Bachrach says they’ll be looking at other grants along with the borrowing of 3 million through an alternative approval process.
They plan on having shovels in the ground this spring.
