Smithers is looking into having Wet’suwet’en entrance signs

Smithers Councillor Phil Brienesse wants visitors to know about Wet’suwet’en culture and history when they enter town.

To do that, he’s calling for entrance signs that let people know they’re in the territory.

“Is it apparent to visitors when they come into our community that there’s a First Nations history and culture here?”

“This is the Town of Smithers but this is also Wet’suwet’en territory as well…so just the idea of a simple statement of fact basically on the signs.”

Council has directed staff to investigate the history of the current entrance signs into town. Brienesse wants to find a way for the new signs to fit in with the current entrances.

He says they’ll also be reaching out to the Office of the Wet’suwet’en on what the signs should say.
