Micro brewery planned for downtown Smithers gets green light from council

Smithers Brewing Co. is looking to bring a microbrewery to downtown Smithers.

Council gave them the green light for their 3,000 square foot building that will be located behind the Alpenhorn off of Main Street.

Part owner Blaine Estby says they plan on having beer on tap next year.

“Smithers is a really forward thinking town; it’s a really outdoor based town and it really fits well with a craft/micro brewery type of world. And really, in the north, we’re one of the areas that don’t have one,” says Estby.

2,000 square feet of the building will be the brewing area with a 10 bbl brewing system for a production of around 11,000 litres.

“We’re also going to have a small pilot system where we can do small batches and do some testers before we go into production.”

In a presentation to council, the company says they have a goal of producing 200,000 litres.

Esby says they also plan on having a tasting room and patio. He hopes construction can start this summer.
