BC Liberals in a tough spot as opposition : Morris

It’s been more than 55 days since British Columbia went to the polls and we still don’t have a precise picture of what our next government is going to look like.

As the NDP gears up to answer that question, UNBC political science lecturer Jason Morris says the party and it’s NDP allies could face quite the challenge from an opposition that lags by just a single parliamentary seat.
But he says it’s going to be an adjustment for the Liberals as well.

“BC Liberal MLAs, those that went back to 2001, for 16 years they’ve been in a terrific position of being able to always propose and do and now they’re in a situation where they can pretty much only oppose and not do a whole lot.”

The election results could be momentous for the major party leaders as well. “BC’s in a unique situation for having turfed its longest-lasting female Premier and we have a situation in which the NDP has never had a Premier re-elected, which doesn’t bode well for Premier-elect Horgan,” says Morris.

Morris says minority governments typically work well for about 2 years – meaning we could be back to the polls sooner rather than later with Horgan fighting for a second NDP victory.

As for Christy Clark, her future is still uncertain but it is unlikely she’ll lead the BC Liberals through another election.

He expects party discipline to be extremely tight as just one absent or independent MLA could change the outcome of any vote.

Premier-Elect John Horgan is expected to call the Legislature back later this month.
