Wildfires cause more evacuations in the Cariboo

The North Cariboo has now seen its first evacuations because of the wildfires burning in the area.

Quesnel RCMP Sargeant Darren Dodge says members are going door to door in the Alexandria area.

He says a fire near the Alexandria First Nations reserve is a major concern as fires are actually burning on both east and west sides of the Fraser River.

Dodge says although there has been no evacuation order, police are conducting tactical evacuations advising residents of the potential risks and asking them to leave their homes at this time, for their safety.

He says they are being asked to go to the Rec Centre in Quesnel on North Star Road.

Other areas under an evacuation order include 103 Mile, 108 Mile,105 Mile, Miocene, Wildwood and the west side of Lac La Hache plus CRD Chair Al Richmond says most people have now left the Sugarcane reserve as well.

The east side of Lac La Hache and the District of 100 Mile House, meanwhile, remain under an Evacuation Alert.

The Hospital in 100 Mile has reportedly been evacuated strictly as a precaution.

Meanwhile, the City of Williams Lake has activated its emergency operations centre at the Fire Hall….also as a precaution.

The city says there is no immediate threat to any structures or property at this time.

The province has declared a state of emergency in the province which, according to CRD Chair Richmond, is good news because it means more resources to deal with the wildfires in the area.

Sprinklers have been set up around 108 Mile and in other areas to protect structures that may be in danger.

Highway 97 2 kilometres north of 100 Mile House to 17 kilometres north of Lac La Hache remains closed as does a stretch of Highway 20 due to wildfires in the area.
