Gustafson Fire near 100 Mile House remains 20 percent contained

There is some good news on the wildfire front in terms of the Gustafson fire that forced the evacuation of 100 Mile House.

Heather Rice, Fire Information Officer for the South Cariboo, says they managed to maintain the current fire perimeter despite yesterday’s wind.

“I am pleased to report that there was no significant increase in the Gustafson fire. It’s now estimated at 5,650 hectares and that increase from 5,000 is simply because of successful controlled burns that we’ve been having. We were actually able to a really good controlled burn last night on the fire in the evening which went very well and that helped to anchor the south part of our fire permititer, south of Big Lake.”

Rice says it continues to be 20 percent contained.

The plan today is to further strengthen that controlled burn area south of Big Lake with larger guards.

It appears the new evacuation alerts in the South Cariboo…east of 100 Mile…are due to the Ashcroft fire.

Rice says that fire was extremely active yesterday and continues to move in a northerly direction through the Loon Lake area.
