Smithers will see thousands of Girl Guides in town all next week for S.O.A.R.

Over 2,500 people will be making their way to Smithers for a BC Girl Guides event this weekend and throughout next week.

Public Relations Director with Spirit of Adventure Rendezvous(S.O.A.R.) Laurie Hooker says they hold the event once every three years.

She says 90% of the camp will make the trip to town via the Smithers airport.

“I call at a one million dollar event because that’s about what BC Girl Guides spends to put on the event. There’s also money in the girl’s pockets and the guider’s pockets that are certainly going to come and visit the town. Every day there will be about 400 people that will come through the town,” says Hooker.

They’ll be camping at the Bulkley Valley Fairgrounds in town and will be staying there until the end of next week.

Hooker says there will be girls from around the world that will learn about the area, making trips to places like the Ksan Village, Houston and along the Bulkley River.

Part of the focus of Girl Guides is understanding social responsibility along with leaving nothing behind and taking nothing when using the land.

“When we have food that’s left over from our food services, it goes out to the local food banks in the area…so we give back as much as we can.”

Hooker also says they’ll be taking on other service projects like painting the horse ring at the site along with making packages for the local shelters.

Not being government funded, the guides pay for their activities by selling their famous cookies along with some registration fees for the girls.

To get your hands on some cookies, you can make your way down next Wednesday at 1 p.m. for a tour of their site.
