Dates announced for Hudson Bay Mountain firewood-giveaway

The Hudson Bay Mountain Resort (HBMR) in Smithers have announced dates for their firewood giveaway.

With 350 cubic meters of slash left over from logging operations on the mountain, they’ll be offering up free firewood August 12th and September 9th.

“If the fire hazards increase we may have to change those dates,” says Operations Manager Frank McBride.

HBM says the wood is leftover from logging operations last year to open up the new Seven Sisters runs on the mountain.

McBride said finding a way to re-purpose the remaining wood is important so that HBMR will have very little slash to burn.

“This will be wood that should be burned in a wood stove or outside in a sealed unit,” said McBride.

He is hoping that by the time the snow flies this season, there will be zero waste wood on the ground on the mountain.

Given the current wildfire situation in central B.C., McBride said HBMR is making it a point to stay aware of fire hazards on the mountain. He’s also asking all contractors working there to sign in at the HBMR maintenance shop.

“When conditions are this dry, even with the little bit of rain we’ve had, we are extremely careful,” said McBride.

“If we see anyone on the mountain attempting to operate vehicles, or any gas powered tool or even other tools that may be sources of ignition (electric saws, grinders, drills), we ask them to refrain until the fire hazard decreases.”

There’s currently a province wide open fire ban. The fire danger rating in our area in the Northwest Fire Centre is moderate to high.
