Dry and hot weather is increasing the fire risk in the Bulkley Valley and Lakes

The fire danger rating remains high in the southern parts of the Northwest Fire Centre including the Bulkley Valley and Lakes.

There’s also an extreme rating around the Morice Lake area.

With a fire ban in place, Fire Information Officer Olivia Pojar says drier conditions have made things worse.

“Fires are more likely to start now than when the prohibition was put in place.”

Pojar says the northwest missed out on a system of rain that hit other areas of the province.

“The forecast is for a drier warming trend for the southern areas of the fire centre. So that’s from about Hazelton to the southern border near Tweedsmuir,” says Pojar.

So far there’s been three illegal fires reported in the northwest since the ban started.

And since the season started on April 1st, there’s been 18 unattended or abandoned fires reported.
