Smithers Fire Department reminding the public a fire ban remains in effect

The Smithers Fire Department have responded to several open fires in town despite a province-wide fire ban.

As a result, Fire Chief Keith Stecko is reminding the public that we’re still in a provincial state of emergency.

“So everyone needs to pitch in and help out and make sure that public safety is number one, and that’s everyone’s responsibility.”

Stecko says we don’t want to use up resources on human caused fires that are needed elsewhere in the province.

He says if you see an open fire to report it immediately. Those that ignore the ban could be hit with some heavy fines.

The fire danger rating in the Northwest Fire Centre is still moderate to high, according to the fire danger rating webpage.
