Smithers Fire Department sends members to fight wildfires near Williams Lake

The Smithers Fire Department has sent four fighters to the Williams Lake area to battle wildfires.

Fire Chief Keith Stecko says the members made the trip this week along with a fire engine and a support vehicle.

“Fire departments that have been (sent) to Willaims Lake have been working very hard whether it’s been using structural protection units, fighting the fires directly (or) protecting large assets,” says Stecko.

“And we – like other departments – are also trading out people as they time out on their deployment. So everyone is working very hard on this.”

Stecko says the four members that were down in Cache Creek have returned home.

The evacuation order for the City of Williams Lake has been reduced to an alert by the Cariboo Regional District.

The weather forecast for the Cariboo area has a predicted high of around 30 degrees along with dry conditions throughout the interior.

Conditions in the Smithers area are also expected to stay dry.

The Smithers Fire Department is reminding the public that a province wide fire ban and state of emergency is still in effect.
