Job Fair Addressing Unemployment in Burns Lake

Four First Nation’s bands will be holding a job fair tomorrow in Burns Lake, which will address the area’s lack of employment.

According to the 2011 National census, the Burns Lake unemployment rate was at 12.%.

Broken down even further, 14% of men and 9.8% are without work.

Yinka Dene Economic Development C.O.O. Shannon Haizimsque says she is trying to increase the amount of aboriginal women in the workforce.

“We have had some of our students and women in trades programs throughout BC,” she says, “and I know that’s one of the target areas we’re trying to reach along with our youth as well.”

The “Nis Tsed’ilh – We Are Moving Forward” job fair will be put on by the Wet’suwet’en First Nation, Burns Lake Band, Nee Tahi Buhn, and Skin Tyee Nation.

It will run Wednesday and Thursday at the Tom Forsythe Arena in Burns Lake from 10 am to 4 pm each day.
