Texan’s bike trip through Bulkley Valley

Some Texas University students are proving that everything, even bike rides, are bigger in the Lone Star state.

The Texas 4000 is a group of students biking through Telkwa Saturday, en route from Austin to Anchorage, Alaska.

The Longhorns are raising money for cancer research, making their journey the longest annual charity bike ride in the world.

Each wave has about 25 people travelling at least 70 miles per day for over two months.

Telkwa Christian Reformed Pastor Joe Ellis helped these students last year and says each rider has a story. He recalls one individual who’s sister was suffering from cancer.

she had never been on a bike before, and so she first had to learn how to ride a bike,” he says, “then she had to learn how to train appropriately to be able to bike 4000 miles in order to get to Anchorage with this group. When she arrived in Telkwa she was going strong.”

The group will be stopping in Tyhee Lake Provincial Park tomorrow from 6:30 PM -8:30 PM for a barbecue and music. The suggested donation is $5.

There will be a second Texas 4000 group stopping in Smithers next weekend.
