Smithers considering urban chickens

Smithers council met Tuesday night and talked urban chickens.

Mayor Taylor Bachrach says the town is considering allowing hens on some lots

“This is something that so many other communities have brought in for a option of local food production and it seems like the way that most communities are going. At the same time we want to make sure we are considering all of the concerns we have heard.”

He says they referred the issue to the advisory planning commission to hear what they have to say on the issue. A public hearing will then follow before council makes any decision.

Bachrach says many in Smithers are eager for a change.

“To be honest, there are certainly residents who keep backyard chickens in contravention of the bylaw. To date, we’ve sort of turned a blind eye to that and as long as there aren’t any complaints it hasn’t been much of an issue.”

Roosters would be prohibited under the proposed bylaw changes.
