Businesses can expect big week with new athletes in town

Smithers businesses will benefit from some upcoming hospitality.

The town is hosting both the BC Bantam Tier-3 Hockey Championships and the National Ski Cross finals next week.

With hundreds of people staying in town, Tourism Smithers Coordinator Gladys Atrill says businesses can expect to be busy.

“People have to eat every day, they’re going to be out and about and visible. Particularly, in the case of the hockey tournament, a lot of families are going to accompany the athletes so there’s going to be siblings and parents, etcetera exploring,” she says.

Atrill said she wouldn’t have exact numbers of the tournament’s economic impact until after the events, but is expecting hundreds of people in town. The hockey tournament alone hosts eight visiting teams and their guardians.

The hockey tournament begins on Sunday while Ski Cross starts Tuesday.
