Hazelton student wins National, $10,000 scholarship

A grade 12 student in South Hazelton was the recipient of a $10,000 National scholarship.

Brandon Greenall was one of only 5 students nationwide to win the Horatio Alger “National Entrepreneurial Scholarship of Canada.” It’s given to high schoolers contributing in their communities, but also face financial needs and adversity.

Brandon says he’s overwhelmed by both the money and the experience.

“It’s a huge honour for sure. (Getting that much money is) a huge weight off my shoulders. I work a part time job at minimum wage so I haven’t been able to save up a whole lot and that amount of money is just a huge comfort for me,” he says

Brandon was also the only recipient not from a major Canadian city or suburb, which he says is something special.

“It’s a really cool feeling to know that a little kid from rural British Columbia could accomplish that. It was a fun time, and I talked about the dangers of polar bears this far north. I made good light of it down there.”

Brandon was honoured at the scholarship reception ceremony in Washington, DC between March 29 – April 3rd. There, he met other recipients and tonnes of influential people like IBM CEO Ginni Rometty, US Supreme Court Justice Clarence Thomas, and actor Tom Selleck.

After graduation, Brandon will head to UNBC and begin studying Health Sciences. He hopes to work in diabetic management and one day, become a doctor who works with diabetic children.
