Smithers Council won’t allow a private school a temporary use permit on Railway Ave.

Smithers council won’t be allowing a school to operate on railway avenue in town.

They shot down a temporary use permit to allow Canyon Creek Private School to be used as a pilot school there for three years.

Mayor Taylor Bachrach says part of the decision was for the safety of children along what he says is a busy road.

“We heard concerns around traffic and the fact that the are industrial uses in the area. In the balance, and what we heard from council, was they would find a better place for the school in the community.”

Council also said the street would have to be cut from a 50k/hr speed limit to 30.

Councillor Gladys Atrill disagreed with council, saying the arguments of the school being put in an industrial area and on the busy railway Ave. weren’t enough of a reason.
