Smithers council wants the public to stay off a section of the Perimeter Trail due to safety concerns.
Mayor Taylor Bachrach says the trail is closed between Schibli Street and Dogwood Park because the bank has fallen into the the stream creating a big hole.
“We have had signs up and we have had barriers up and we have had some challenges with people removing the barriers or going around the barriers. It is a huge hole in the trail and we don’t want anybody to hurt themselves. It is for public safety and we ask that people observe that.”
He says there are detours if hiking or running the trail.
For now users will have to move onto one of the streets and re-connect with the Perimeter Trail after Dogwood Park.
