Google Trekker is in Smithers this week putting trails on Google Maps

The beautiful scenic look-out spots around Smithers will soon be on Google.

The Google Trekker is in town this week capturing images of trails and mountain views that would otherwise be impossible to capture from the google vehicle.

Councillor Gladys Atrill is working with the Trekker team.

“Literally, it’s great for putting us on the map. Google is the go-to location. When people are googling trekking in the mountains, or the Bulkley Valley, or Northern BC, people are going to see this spectacular imagery and it’s very compelling,” says Atrill.

All the images they’re collecting will be completely uploaded next year.

The google trekker will be in Northern BC filming trails and beautiful views throughout the summer.

Clint Fraser with Northern BC Tourism says the unit will cover plenty of ground over the summer, reaching Haida Gwaii and Salmon Glacier in the Northwest, Liard Hot Springs and Tumbler Ridges Global Geopark in the Peace.

“Then obviously all areas in between, places like the Ancient Forest… ” says Fraser.

Northern BC Tourism will be relying on volunteers to take the Trekker into remote sites, and will be trying to source local people with a connection to the place who can expand on the story of the site.

There are just two Google Trekkers in Canada this year, both of them in BC.
