Smithers Council is trying to deal with a public urination problem in town

The issue of people urinating on the library has prompted council to take some action.

Council was made aware of the daily calls the local RCMP were getting about the issue, with council discussing how it makes staff at the library uncomfortable. With it directly affecting municipal staff, council was motivated to do something.

“They’re moving a bench to try and deter some of the people abusing the area by Veterans park,” explains mayor Taylor Bachrach, about how council is attempting to solve the problem. Bachrach says it’s not an easy fix.

“What we’re talking about are some really difficult issues that have been here for a long time in our community,” says Bachrach.

Council decided putting a urinal there isn’t cheap, and removing the benches there to force those people out just moves the problem around town.

“So what we need to start thinking about is addressing the behavior itself.”
