This week the alternative approval process to allow the borrowing of two million dollars closed up for the Smithers airport modernization project, with only three submissions against it collected
Council, and Mayor Taylor Bachrach have been focused on making sure the project is built as energy efficient as possible,
Bachrach quells any speculation on the 6 million dollars for the budget increasing due to unforeseen improvements ahead of meeting with the architects
“We haven’t had those conversations yet. So…it’s probably premature to talk about weather those investments are possible inside of the six million dollars we have to work with,” says Bachrach.
The design process will likely take the rest of the year.
Bachrach remains confident in the expansion project that will allow larger aircraft to land with the airport seeing slumping numbers of aircraft moving through and a drop in passengers since last year.
“Right now the economy in the north is soft. We’re optimistic it’s going to pick up.”
