Floor plan for 1,100 square metres of addition for Smithers Airport approved by council

Smithers council this week approved a design and floor plan for part of the airport modernization project.

New construction planned for the airport upgrade will see around 11 hundred square metres that’s part of the new floor plan designed by Moore Wilson Architects.

Airport Manager Rob Blackburn says the architects can now move ahead with further design.

“We’re always looking 20 years out when we’re looking at airport planning. We gotta be careful we’re not designing for just today or tomorrow, but we’re looking 20 years out.”

Blackburn says the project will come back to council for further approval when it’s nearing completion.

The plan is to have the design development completed September 13th, with construction starting March next year.

Council this week also approved the bylaw to borrow the 2 million needed for the six million dollar project.
