Statement today from Aboriginal Relations minister, John Rustad on the Gitxsan eviction notice issued last week.

The Gitxsan issued the eviction notice to all provincial operations on their land until treaty negotiations have been resolved which they say includes the illegal offer of some Gitxsan territory to neighbouring bands.

In a press release Rustad says ultimately shared territory disputes are best resolved by the Nations themselves.

But he says the ministry has been working closely with the Gitxsan, Kitsumkalum and Kitselas to resolve the dispute.

While the Gitxsan say there has been no consent granted for activities such as forestry and rail operations on the territory, Rustad says the government takes consultation seriously and recognizes that it is both a legal obligation and good governance.
