Smithers wood burning appliance survey results

The survey found that roughly 150 residences use a wood burning stove in the town limits – with six per cent of that number using it as a primary source of heat.

Those are some of the results of a survey that targetted 40 percent of town residents, 22 of which indicating the use of a wood stove in town.

Mayor Taylor Bachrach say this is part of an ongoing emission reduction strategy for the town.

“We’re going to be talking with the ministry of the environment, council and staff about what kinds of actions are going to be most effective. We want to make sure when we’re investing money, we’re having a measurable impact.”

The survey cost the town around 5 thousand dollars.

Roughly two out of three respondents reported that wood smoke affected air quality in their neighborhood to a small extent or not at all.

Older neighborhoods also seem to have more wood stoves according to the results.

Council will receive the information at tonight’s meeting at 6:30.
