Gravel crushing between Smithers and Telkwa raises concerns

The Regional District of Bulkley Nechako will be looking at the scope of gravel crushing operations in the rural areas between Smithers and Telkwa.

Smithers Councillor Gladys Atrill says the gravel crushing has been annoying several rural residents on agriculturally zoned land.

“There are folks who are concerned about the number of gravel pits and the crushing operations that are happening,” says Atrill.

“I’m seeing a bit of increased angst between some of the residents. Should we give some consideration to what the primary use might be of the river corridor?

sound travels. If you hear one gravel crushing operation and you hear another…just imagine on your day off, your evening or early mornings – overnight your neighbor becomes an industrial operator.”

Regional District Area A Director Mark Fisher has district staff looking to find out how many gravel crushing operations there are and their locations.

He says that will look into the proximity of multiple crushing operations with resident’s homes.

The regional district issues temporary use permits for gravel crushing, while the province permits the extraction process.
