Paying for sidewalks part of Smithers public committee talks tonight

The Small Business Task Force wants the Town of Smithers to pay a percentage of the costs for sidewalks that businesses are required to pay following a development exceeding $75,000.

That bylaw led to the construction of the infamous ‘lone sidewalk.’

Mayor Taylor Bachrach says it will be a part of tonight’s committee of the whole talks.

“If you’re a business person it helps in costs for development. If you’re a community member…costs that were usually paid by the developer will be (paid) by the tax payer.”

The task force also made recommendations around tax exemptions, off street parking exemptions, parking lots and paving standards.

Council will discuss the recommendations tonight at 6:30.
