Smithers Fire Rescue is reminding the public that smoke alarms don’t last forever.
This Thanksgiving Sunday fire Prevention Week Starts up. Smithers Fire Chief Kieth Stecko remind residents of the importance of checking the life of smoke alarms.
“Time and again, I’ve seen the life-saving impact smoke alarms can have in a home fire, but
I’ve also seen the tragedy that can result when smoke alarms aren’t working properly,” says Stecko. “That’s why we’re making a concerted effort to educate Smithers residents about the overall importance of smoke alarms, and that they do have a life limit.”
Stecko indicates they should be replaced at least every 10 years, and checked monthly.
Smithers fire service encourages people to check the manufacturing date on the bottom of the alarm.
