“Fire Hall Rink’ construction can move ahead with Town of Smithers approval

It’s now a race with winter to build a new outdoor skating rink in Smithers.

With the old one destroyed, it’s up to the Smithers Fire Fighters Association to build a new one before the snow fall.

The association took on the planning, financials and construction for the new ‘Fire Hall Rink.’

Fire Fighter Sean Rowell says with council’s approval tonight(Tues), they’re ready to get started on construction, but need a few more volunteers to help out.

“We’re hoping to get started tomorrow,” says Rowell. “We’ve got the permission, now we have to go do it. I think we have enough people that are pretty excited about it, and we’ll get them together…as everything in this community, the community builds it.”

Rowell says they’re looking to raise $2,000 more to top up on materials – they’ve raised over $16,000 already.

The plan is to make the rink mobile so it can fit in with the town’s future central park plans.
