First Nations Driver Program to be run by Carrier Sekani Family Services

The Carrier Sekani Family Services will deliver the First Nations Driver Education Program for the Highway 16 Corridor.

Director, Mary Teegee says the new initiative will fill a major void.

“One of the issues that we do have is the access to getting driver’s training, here we have different programs and driving schools but we don’t have that for the rest of the north. What we need to do is look at innovative ways to ensure they get their driver licenses.”

“Not everybody has an ICBC office just a few blocks from their house or downtown. We don’t have that in some of our municipalities, nevermind our first nation communities so how do we ensure we get our students ready in passing the test.”

The program will get later this year and will provide hands-on training to boost the number of Class 4 and 5 drivers in first nation communities within the corridor.

It is also part of the $5 million dollar Highway 16 Transportation Action Plan.
