Smithers Rec Hockey calls for Ice Arena user fee freeze

With prices increasing 5 per cent this year, and 10 percent the last two years, the Smithers Rec Hockey is looking for council to freeze any fee increases.

Mitch Peterson with rec hockey presented a delegation to council this week calling for the creation of a committee to balance costs, fees and revenues for the arena.

“We just feel the town needs to put the reigns on and slow the increases down a little bit so we have time to deal with them,” says Peterson. “We’re struggling with covering the costs; we’re getting to the tipping point where user-ships are going to start declining.”

Mayor Taylor Bachrach says it will be a kind of balancing act to hear rec hockey’s call for a committee with the reality of running two arenas.

“As council we’re going to discuss whether that’s warranted and whether we want to open up the policy and look at how we do business,” says Bachrach. “Staff are going to come back to us and indicate whether it’s feasible to set up this type of committee.”
