School District 54 has 112 thousand dollars from the province to start upgrading the Houston Secondary School’s air systems in a bid to make it more energy efficient.
Treasurer Dave Margerm says it will pay for some engineering and feasibility studies to get the work started.
“The actual cost to re-do the ventilation, the air, the control systems, computer system, the high vac on the roof; would cost about 1.8 million. This is the initial start up for that,’ says Margerm. “(the province) is interested in seeing how much it would cost,” with part of the study involving further cost assessment.
He says it will take years to have the whole upgrade completed with the province yet to commit on the capital costs. He also says the school district spends about 100 thousand dollars a year less than it did 10 years ago on energy, and says this upgrade will compliment that.
The province is spending 20 million as part of the School Enhancement Program fund on 217 school improvements.
