Smithers to have a Dan Hamhuis street

Smithers council has announced plans to rename a part of First avenue after local hockey start and Olympic Gold medal winner, Dan Hamhuis.

Council held a special lunch meeting with media and Hamhuis today to announce that the north end of First Avenue between Toronto and Dogwood Park will soon be called Dan Hamhuis Way.

Hamhuis says he grew up playing hockey on that street every day.

“It’s a really big honour to have a street named after me. I have always been really proud to be from Smithers and to represent our city…What the community have given me too is so much with my hockey career from the start, just the amenities around town and just the great people in town who have volunteered so much of their time.”

Bachrach says the Town wanted to recognize Hamhuis for his great acheivements in sport and constant support of his hometown including recent financial donations to the new ice arena.
