Carbon tax free Trump gives conservatives fuel for opposition

Conservatives have been blasting the plan for a carbon tax, but now with President Trump a reality, they’re calling the proposed levy insanity. They say imposing carbon pricing nationally will allow America a leg up economically with trade as Canada’s main competitor.

NDP Skeena-Bulkley Valley MP Nathan Cullen says although a Canadian climate change plan is well over due, he still has concerns with how things will play out south of the boarder.

“What you don’t wanna have is jurisdictions where someone is setting up a coal plant or something and try to hop over the boarder somewhere where they get a free chance to pollute,” says Cullen.

He says with Trudeau far off track on meeting Paris agreements, and failing to meet even Harper’s climate targets, the conservatives, and even liberals, can’t use this as an excuse.

“Argue it from whatever side you want, but the argument for delay drives me crazy. We’ve seen that movie before, and we’ve seen it for more than a generation now and that’s enough.”

MP Bob Zimmer has been pushing fora poverty reduction strategy looking at affects to low-income Canadians from any proposed carbon tax.

Cullen says the numbers they use are inflated, with the tax only affecting a small number of Canadians.
