Press conference to look at reductions to AAC and softwood lumber dispute

Anticipated cuts to the timber supply in northern BC will be the topic of a press conference held with several MPs including Nathan Cullen.

He’s been reaching out to the two Prince George MPs to help call on Ottawa’s support to absorb the shock on communities from reductions to the annual allowable cut.

“With this new government having some issues around the resource sector trying to diversify, many commitments around infrastructure; we want to put some pressure on them in a bipartisan way for communities that are already feeling the hit,” says Cullen. “There is a great deal of support that Ottawa has promised for many years.”

The province says effective September 8, 2016, the allowable annual cut for the Lakes TSA was adjusted to 1,648,660 cubic metres, with pine killing beetles to blame for cuts in the past.

Cullen says an expired soft wood lumber trade deal and ongoing dispute with the US will also be part of their talks with Ottawa.

“Houston, we have a problem; because the dispute is ongoing. And I think there was some hope from the Canadian side that they would wait for Hillary Clinton to get elected and calmer heads would prevail. It’s uncertain how we’re going to resolve this.”

A Trump presidency has also cast doubt on how Canada will compete with planned US tax cuts, no carbon tax and Trump vowing to pull out of the Paris Climate Agreements.

The tele-press conference will be Nov 18th.
