Thinking about renovating or demolishing your home?
WorkSafe BC is encouraging home owners to check for asbestos before following suit.
Several materials that were installed in homes built before 1990 could have the material according to Vice President of Prevention Field Service, Al Johnson.
“So things like floor tiles, linoleum, pipe installations, dry wall tape and cement, the insulation in your attic and the hard-board siding that we find on the outside of older homes often contains asbestos.”
Asbestos is the leading cause of death among BC workers in the past decade says Johnson.
“Just under 600 workers in the province during the past decade have died from Asbestos related exposure and 30% of those worked in the construction industry.”
Just 36% of those who have renovated a home built before 1990 in the past five years recall testing for the presence of asbestos before renovations.
Only 51% of home-owners surveyed believe it is their responsibility to test for Asbestos when making renovations.
