Gitxsan House group Madii Lii planning on taking LNG project to court

The Madii Lii house Group of the Gitxsan are planning on filing a joint judicial review with another house group against the approval of the Prince Rupert Gas Transmission as well as the location of the terminal on Lelu Island.

Maddi Lii spokesperson Richard Wright says they’re planning on filing the title action within a few weeks.

“We’re challenging the process of it all because there was a lack of, and very little, consultation; and they pulled the plug on consultation with us,” says Wright.

“The government has put the cart before the horse by approving it and pushing everyone aside and dealing with the cherry pickers…they’re the ones that will accept the first dollar that’s thrown on the table.”

Part of the proposed pipeline would run through the Madii Lii territory for 34.2 kilometres, something Wright says they’re not sure will fit.

The Trans Canada pipeline would carry natural gas 900 km from Hudsons Hope to the proposed Pacific Northwest LNG terminal.

On their website, the Prince Rupert Gas Transmission Project is ‘working to ensure Indigenous communities benefit directly from the project.”

The Moose was unable to reach Premiere Christy Clark as she was visiting Smithers yesterday where a dozen anti-LNG protesters rallied out front of a meet and greet with the premiere and Chamber of Commerce.
