A plan to address violence against aboriginal women and girls has been unveiled by the federal government. $25 million dollars has been set aside for the next five years that would run until 2020. Prince George-Peace River MP Bob Zimmer says the government wants to have an action plan, not just do a study on the issue.
“We know a lot of the issues that are going on there, and have committed $25 million to address the issue,” says Zimmer, “we want to produce results and we have a comprehensive way to start tackling it.”
This plan comes amidst calls for a national inquiry into missing and murdered women across Canada. Zimmer says the plan includes developing community safety plans, create projects that break the intergenerational cycles of violence and abuse.
