Province to decide on how to resolve conflict at Gitwangak Band Office

Worried about an alleged take over of the Gitwangak Elementary School by the band, hereditary chiefs are pushing to keep the indigenous language teaching as is, and not in the hands of the band.

Minister of Aboriginal Relations and Reconciliation John Rustad says it’s a conflict the province is looking to resolve.

“We’re trying not to sort of pick a side or create more challenges, but we are trying to figure out; how do we provide support to bring resolution – so that – the most important part – the need for people are looked after and we can continue our relationships,” says Rustad.

Hereditary chiefs are also looking to reclaim the band office, with the education society also filing a lawsuit against the band.
