Portland Loo arrives in downtown Smithers

Downtown Smithers will soon have a functioning outdoor washroom.

The infamous Portland Loo was delivered to its location on Second Ave. beside the Bugwood Bean coffee shop today.

The bathroom won’t require heating in the winter and will be resistant to vandalism.

Council approved the $195,000 cost of the purchase and installation of the loo back in February.

At the time, Mayor Taylor Bachrach said the decision came after a lot of feedback from residents.

“Yes, this unit has a larger capital cost at the front end. Over the life of the facility, our hope is that the operating costs will be less.”

Bachrach said it’s also a central location.

“If you look at Main Steet from the highway all the way to Rail Ave. – Second Ave. puts you in the middle of the action.”

There’s no news yet on when the inaugural flush will take place or when the loo will be ready for public use.
