The MLA for Stikine has introduced a new private member’s bill in Victoria.
Doug Donaldson says this would prevent the conversion of natural gas pipelines to transport heavy oil or diluted bitumen.
“It is a major concern with First Nations in Stikine and residents of the northwest,” he says. “Companies, if they get their proposed LNG pipelines approved, somewhere in the future have the ability to change those to transport oil from the tar sands in Alberta to the north coast.”
Earlier this year, Donaldson said Energy Minister Rich Coleman told the Wet’suwet’en that he would put legislation in place to prevent such conversions from taking place.
However, Donaldson says he has seen no action on that.
The bill was given first reading today.
