Standing in opposition just feels wrong: Rustad

The BC Legislature is changing from red to orange as NDP Leader John Horgan has been named Premier-Elect, tasked with forming government by Lieutenant Governor Judith Guichon.

The 42-44 vote of no confidence resulted in Christy Clarks resignation from the position, and event that’s left Liberal MLA John Rustad a little frustrated.

The Minister of Aboriginal Relations and Reconciliation says however, he has to respect the LG’s decision.

“It is what it is, so from here, of course, the job is to do the best I can for the riding that elected me to make sure that our issues are front-and-centre, and to hold the government to account.”

He says just standing on the opposition side feels wrong, but he intends to bring the same amount of political professionalism to the table.

“I think it’s going to be frustrating. It’ll be very hard to get anything done; we won’t be able to really undertake any major initiatives, but hopefully we’ll be able to get some things happening. That’s what the people have selected me to do, and so I’ve got to try to do the best job I can.”

Rustad has served with the BC Liberals out of the Nechako Lakes region since 2005.

He was recently named Minister of Forests when Kelowna-Mission MLA Steve Thomson took over as Speaker of the House.
