Wildfire prompts evacuation alert south of Vanderhoof

The Regional District of Bulkley-Nechako has issued an Evacuation Alert due to a wildfire burning near Tatuk Lake and Finger Lake.

“The Evacuation Alert is issued to persons residing or present in the area from the south of Bobtail Connector Forest Service Road, from Long Lake Forest Service Road, to Tatuk Lake Forest Service Road, and South to the Regional District of Bulkley-Nechako Boundary.”

The BC Wildfire Service says the lightning-caused fire has grown to 200 hectares in size just west of Finger Tatuk Provincial Park in Big Bend Creek.

Chair of the regional district Bill Miller says BC Parks is making sure people there are aware.

“We’re not really sure how many tourists are in there. But there’s two lodges in there and some campsites, some unmanned campsites…and there’s a provincial rec-site in there, too,” says Miller.

He says the alert is a heads up that an evacuation order could happen if the situation worsens.

For general information on the evacuation alert you can call the Regional District of Bulkley-Nechako at 250-692-3195 or 1-800-320-3339 Monday to Friday 0830 – 1630 or Emergency Management BC 1-800-663-3456 after hours.”
